Functions To Festivals: A FreakHoe De Mayo Origin Story

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is an unofficial holiday that celebrates the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War; Also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the U.S, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage. For the past few years, in the city of Atlanta, Georgia however, this holiday has been the catalyst to a thrilling event known as FreakHoe De Mayo.

When you see the word “Freak Hoe”, you instantly think of the lively, raunchy record from Future. The track itself has stood the test of time as a club-anthem classic but more importantly, always set the tone for what a night at FreakHoe De Mayo would entail.

Originating with a group of college friends who had a stronghold on the party scene and campus culture. Their successful curation of a multitude of high-level, interactive campus events allowed for FHDM to become a footprint of that distinct culture. FreakHoe De Mayo was an event each spring semester during their tenure students kept on their radar.

With May marking the end of the school year, FHDM was a night to celebrate and forget about the stress of classes before heading into final exams. The radiant energy of FreakHoe made it easy for everyone to create their own memorable experience.

Since 2015, crowds have gathered to experience an ambiance like no other. What made FHDM notable was the uniqueness of each “function.” The location varied and anyone who ever attended can detail their own version of the nights.

Crowded lines and hundreds of people from all over Atlanta would come to get a glimpse of this affair. On separate occasions we’ve witnessed crowds of individuals jumping over one another & swarming an entry point just to get inside, the hottest songs blasting in speakers while piñatas are being crushed in warehouses and much more.

It’s been 3 years since the 5th installment of FreakHoe De Mayo and with the country operating like normal again, the ambitious originators are thinking much bigger and have transitioned from the local campus scene. They have their sights on establishing themselves as the ultimate event curators in the city of Atlanta.

This year’s FreakHoe De Mayo is crafted in the form of a music festival at Believe Music Hall. The overall idea is continuity and growth while following the unique formula we spoke of. Evolving from throwing functions to hosting a concert is no small task but a challenge nonetheless, the originators are ready for.

The event is being MC’d by one of the biggest hosts Atlanta has in Fly Guy DC. If you keep up with him, you’re aware he brings the occasion to every event and always comes through with unexpected guests & surprises. This is something to note for festival-goers as the names being announced are never the only performers you will see. The announced headliners are Travis Porter, Skooly, Asian Doll, Tokyo Vanity, Klondike Blonde & Myles Yachts. Who else will we have the pleasure of witnessing??

With Spring in full-swing and Summer on the horizon, festivals and concerts will be premier events to be at. Atlanta is the center of the music scene and events are constantly taking place to enjoy talented musicians. There will be many novice names at FHDM to discover which is something else exciting to witness.

Mixing the established FreakHoe De Mayo culture with an unforgettable concert experience is a recipe for success. The FreakHoe Music Festival will be a stellar night just as the previous functions were, so don’t miss out.
