NOVICE PRINCIPLES EXCLUSIVE: Abby Jasmine is ready for the next chapter with her new album, CLOSURE
Music has been buzzing with excitement, with quality being on the rise and fresh faces dominating. There is a conversation happening about who has what it takes to stand the test of time in a digital era where everything is moving at such a rapid rate.
Abby Jasmine is one recording artist who is becoming a prominent name amongst her peers.
What makes Abby Jasmine a striking name is her irreplicable duality. On the one hand you have records like the lead single, “BELIEVE IN ME”, from her upcoming album that aligns with the historical elements of R&B through soul, vocals, and storytelling. On another, the Staten Island native has displayed fierce wordsmith abilities through various records such as “First Day Out” ft. Smoke DZA and “Rent Free”, amongst others to showcase an asset she keeps in her arsenal. Her songwriting is one of those special traits that will contribute to her continued success.
Abby Jasmine is not just another emerging name—she’s one of music’s most promising voices, forging a unique path for herself. Consistently showcasing that she is a force to be reckoned with.
We are now days away from her newest contribution to music in the form of an album titled, CLOSURE. 14 songs that are releasing on February 14th and will be worth every listen.
For Abby, music has always been a deeply personal journey. She didn’t follow the conventional route, but her raw talent and adaptability have distinguished her from the status quo.
She first gained notoriety on Vine, where her comedic flair attracted a following, but when she shifted to music, it became clear she was more than just an internet personality—she is a true artist with a message.
It was projects like Who Cares and I Hate You 2 that made her realize just how many people were invested in her journey. These projects marked pivotal moments, solidifying her place in music and affirming that she was on the right track.
She now embarks on a new chapter with her highly anticipated album, CLOSURE—a milestone that marks years of growth coming full circle.
With co-executive producer, Prxd.Jay, she’s exploring new sounds, pushing creative boundaries, and crafting some of her best work yet, leaning heavily into her R&B prowess. Her second independent album is a culmination of her stellar vision. It has been a defining factor in her journey, making this release even more personal and meaningful.
Novice Principles was privileged enough to have an in-depth conversation with the budding star about her evolution, the transition to independence, family values, and the deeper meaning behind CLOSURE amongst much more. You can read the full interview below.
CLOSURE: In Conversation with Abby Jasmine
Cherry: We are here with thee Abby Jasmine. She is getting prepared to drop her newest album, CLOSURE.
Abby: Thank you for having me!
Cherry: I always want to start by asking, how’s your mental health as we get close to release day?
Abby: My mental health is in a really good place. I was going to say in shambles, but it’s really not. I’m in a really good space mentally. Me and my team, we have a thousand tabs open in our brains at all times. We’re kind of all over the place, but in a good way.
Cherry: When “BELIEVE IN ME” dropped, I said, oh, yeah Abby’s album is going to be great.
Abby: It feels a lot different this time around. I’ve had my hands in every aspect of this project.
Cherry: Do you think that comes from being an independent artist? You’ve been independent for a few years but is that something different now as opposed to maybe years ago?
Abby: Yeah, after Growing Pains and seeing what worked and what didn’t, I wanted to take more of an initiative to make sure all my ducks were in a row. With Growing Pains, there were a couple loose ends that weren’t tied up until the last day. Whereas with the CLOSURE release, I want to make sure everything’s already done in advance so when it’s the day of release, I don’t have as much to do.
Cherry: Before we get into CLOSURE, I wanted to tap back into your early days; Being from and growing up in New York as it relates to what it has done for you.
Abby: So where should I start? I am from Staten Island. I graduated, worked a bunch of odd end jobs. And through that time, I was making videos on the Internet. This was the Vine era. I turned 18, and I decided that I was going to go into the military. That’s what what my family wanted me to do. And then at one point, I had recorded my first song because the friends I was staying with were musicians.
Abby: I think [WHO CARES] was the project that people took notice of me more instead of being like, “oh, this is the girl from the Internet that was making funny videos.”
Cherry: Who is Abby Jasmine outside of the music?
Abby: I am a person that deeply cares about everything but also isn’t attached to anything. I’m funny and charismatic. Overall, a creative person who loves art in all of its forms. Cinematography, painting, the visual aspect of things. I’m great to be around.
Cherry: What do you do to decompress aside from music?
Abby: These days, I sleep. We are in an extremely grind culture era and I don’t believe in it. I don’t think we need to grind every single day of our lives. Outside of that, I like to be with my friends. I like to help them with whatever they have going on. I’m very family oriented. That’s the way I grew up. With any relationship I cultivate, I want it to feel very organic.
Cherry: It’s no secret that you can rap as well. Is that something that we’re going to see more of on CLOSURE?
Abby: I dabble! CLOSURE came about because I went through a separation. I’ve lost friends, family and a lot of things in the past few years. CLOSURE is me moving past those things. This is a R&B centered project.
Abby: I do have a bunch of [rap-based songs] in the tuck. My rapper friends have been hitting me up wanting me to come to the studio to feature on songs of theirs.
Cherry: How has this recording process been leading into the release?
Abby: The recording process was great. When we started recording the album, it wasn’t titled CLOSURE. I wasn’t really working towards [an album]. I was making songs at one point, and then boom, got my heart broken. Then I decided to put this energy into something. I sat down with my producer and engineer, Prxd.Jay, who helped me through this whole process. We recorded three songs in that session. And then at that point, I had maybe six or seven songs.
Abby: A lot of the more vulnerable songs on this album were written by me in my room or at the studio; Unpacking my feelings over not just love loss, but loss in general. It was really important for my healing process and journey. It helped me get the closure I needed that I never got.
Cherry: Why “BELIEVE IN ME” as the lead single as opposed to any other song on the project?
Abby: “BELIEVE IN ME” was first recorded in 2023, I had it in the tuck for a really long time, and I finally finished it at some point last year. When it came down to releasing songs off the project, I wanted to make a statement as far as what kind of mindset, what I’m feeling at the moment. I felt this record was the perfect thesis statement.
Abby: I want people to believe in me like I believe in myself and my team. I want people to see where I’m coming from.
Cherry: Who came up with the concept of the cover art? There’s a lot of symbolism within it.
Abby: Me and Mayra came up with the concept. Before we even started shooting anything, we spent two weeks on FaceTime with our laptops open making a presentation so everything would be mapped out. We were very meticulous and intentional.
Cherry: As far as the “Outside with abby jasmine” vlog is that something you’re going to continue this year?
Abby: 100%. I want to show my personality outside of the music because I’m pretty fun. I just want to showcase that side of me a little bit more.
Cherry: What was your favorite song on the project to record?
Abby: “Dance with Me” is definitely one of my favorites because [Prxd.Jay] is always telling me to do something different. He’s very important in my process when it comes to trying new things. He is very good at getting me outside of my comfort zone. It’s a song you can play in the club.
Cherry: Is CLOSURE going to be similar to Who Cares and Growing Pains visually?
Abby: I am going to say no. On CLOSURE, I wanted to take a more relatable approach. Whereas the other projects were a little bit more strictly music videos; Not really too much personality based. CLOSURE is different. Some of the songs, we went a little bit satirical on the treatments. I wanted it to be fun because some of the subject matter through the album is melodramatic. I wanted to keep that upbeat vibe when it came to doing the visuals.
Cherry: When people listen to the album for the first time, what do you want them to take away?
Abby: It’s okay to be in tune with your emotions. You’re not anything negative for being in touch with your emotions and expressing them. Two, taking accountability for things that you may have done to contribute to situations. And three, self awareness. I think that is very key. I want people to hear this album and be like, wow.
Abby: As far as what I want them to think about me…I want people to walk away and think, “She’s one of them ones.” Like Yes. She writes. She directs. She engineers. She does everything.
Cherry: Did you have any last words?
Abby: Stream CLOSURE, pre-save CLOSURE, everything CLOSURE. It’s time to unpack and heal. Get it together. Move forward. Keep your foot on the gas!
